RE: KTM vs. _________

Maybe you should go back to basics and mod up another Blaster, cuz a guy like Drummer would probably clean your frikken KTM riding clock with his lowly YFZ.
Much obliged.
Okay blaster, lets put the price tag on your ktm VS. my yfz.
4K for my bike.
+$1400 for the front end.
+$500 for the swingarm
+$400 for the axle.
+$200 for bars/accesories.
+750 for the motor, piston, crank
+$400 in hard parts.
+$800 tires/rims.
More than likely, I left something out, but let's add up.
That come's out to $8450. + a rear shock, and head work, I'll end up around $10,000. That's a full blown motocross bike, 58-60hp, suspension all the way around.
Let's the price tag on yours including price of the bike and all parts added up.
Drummer, you forgot two things. If I remember correctly, you spent $500 on the swingarm because the old one cracked, correct?
The other thing you forgot is the satisfaction most get from customizing their quads to exactly suit their needs. That, IMO, is priceless. When you show a friend what you have done to the beastie, you get to experience the pride factor. For over 11K, the other guy admits his suspension needs to be retuned to his weight, and the first thing he did was throw a Hindle pipe on it. Whether he paid for the pipe or not makes no difference. At some point, he wanted for more power...and he will want again, mark my words.
Is the KTM technically race ready? Yes, but theres not one serious racer that won't be pouring money into upgrades, whether it be to the mill, or the suspension. Add those upgrades to the selling price, and its a VERY expensive quad. In the states, you can buy 2 YFZs for the price of one 450SX, give or take a few bucks. That extra cash means a TON of upgrades, and the satisfaction of customizing a quad to exactly what you want.
I think the SX is one hell of a machine, but when I see guys like Drummer and Wolvie posting pics of their most recent mods, it shows me yet another source of joy in owning an ATV.
Ever see Chip Foose build up or restore a car? To me, the process is more intriguing than the result by far.
IMO , NOTHING beats the pride factor you get when modding your own vehicle, atv comp , ANYTHING.
And if feel oh-so bitter sweet when you beat the chit talkers in races.

RE: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Oh I earned it, no doubt about that. I appologized the next day for my actions, and made amends with those that I felt neccessary to.
Grab ass with someone elses wife isn't cool, neither is physically harming a female. I hope you hurt him badly. Idiotic drunks.

RE: How long will it take? Will the others catch on?

For years, the Wolverine and Scrambler stood alone. Enter the Renegades. How long before the other manufacturers come to the realization that this segment of ATVs has a ton of potential, and is becoming more popular by the day? Will they allow Yamaha and Can Am to corner the market, or will they join in the fun at some point? I think if they all enter this market, it will force yet another ATV segment to vastly improve in all aspects.....power, weight, suspension, overall performance. Imagine a Renegade slimmed down to around 500 pounds by using lightweight materials. I think we will see this sooner than later, if the other manufacturers have any sense of whats hot. Honda, of course, will be the last to cross the line and participate.
thats coming within the next 2 years.
before you know it , lightweight Utility atvs will be in heavy competition with sport quads.
And there goes your dramastic rise in UTV costs.

RE: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

The crowbar inn .. haha
i partied with some college kids that where back for christmas break. had over a bottle to myself , plus cashed a 30 pack between me another guy and 2 chicks.. went to a party. Saw they had a bottle of Admiral Nelson (knock off of Capt'n Morgan) and just started chuggin it straight.
decided i wasnt feeling the party so i was gunna walk to another party .... made it 2 blocks , fell down a hill into a creek... \
This is where everything is foggy for me.
I ended up thinking someone elses house was mine. so i walked in and chilled on their chair , they woke up , called the cops... became combative with the cops.. finally when they got me under control , i was good to go i guess...
Rough night , i dont remember any of it though. woke up sunday morning and was like WTF ... had a lot of unanswered questions , and still do.

RE: KTM vs. _________

Heck you could even buy a used 450 and mod the******out of it. Or do like me and find someone's race bike for cheap. They're already going to be setup to prolevel at a fraction of the cost.
Its not always best to buy a "pre-modded" bike from someone else ... it not done right , you can be looking at a hefy bill and a greater headache than losing a race.
That goes with everything though , not just ATV's

RE: Okay...hats off.............but...........

2 KTMs, out of 3 in the series, thats pretty good fir a first year bike, i have no idea what bbqmaster is talking about with the reliability issues, the only issue that wasnt 100% my fault was the clutch line leaking. my xc ran 11 motos at one of the parry sound events after a week of riding camp on the parry sound track probably about 40hrs or HARD riding in a week without an oil change without a single hiccough. THAT, is reliability.
...so when you had to rebuild the top end after owing it less than a month, that was completely your fault? Don't deny either. The evidence is here somewhere in a thread YOU created. From what you have told us, you are vitually the only one racing KTM in your area. Maybe bbqmaster has more exposure to other KTM riders, and thats where his info is derived from. I had a 2003 Rincon...never had a single problem. Other people say they had many. I believe them. I know this makes no sense to you just cuz of the way you view things, but the data of the masses outweighs the data of the one.
For those of you who missed it, the evidence thread. Notice the backpedaling.
I'd have to say , after reading what you originally posted it was mechanical failure do to improper set-up out of the crate.
There is no way it should eat up anti-freeze when idleing , nor should your dad have been shocked when pulling the fuse with the key off. (that shoulda been your first incling something was going terribly wrong)
You blew it up in no time , i believe it was the first race of the season? or maybe before that? i dont recall , but i know it was early in the bike's life.
It's ok to admit that the bike faulted. Dont stand by KTM because its what you currently own, Stand up for yourself - Talking bad about something you own isnt always a bad thing, it just shows maturity and the ability to understand the name doesnt make the bike.

RE: Why can't people be objective?

I wish the 2003 polaris predator was actually wired GOOD. Since i've owned mine (since 2003) i have became a backyard professional at electrical works.
Their trannys are more notchy than an old decrepid tree infested with king wood peckers.
AND ALL POLARIS VALVES SUCK ASS!!!!!!
My pred. has let me down so many times, from not firing right before a local ice race , to being miles back in deeps woods and dieing, ALL do to electrical failure.
but i still love them , i just dont know why yet.

RE: Renegade 800 vs Sportsman 850 XP

Can-am Renegade 800X
70 Hp
75-80 mph top speed
23-25 mpg
$9,300 +tax title license etc
Polaris Sportsman 850 XP
70 Hp
80+ top speed
20-22 mpg
*quoted me a price of $10,300 (MSRP is 8,999.00 +)
Review HERE
Suzuki KQ 750
42 Hp
Unknown MPG
Unknown Top speed
Quoted a price of $6200
I am still in the midst of looking around. I was able to find ONE renegade 800X in stock , and it was still in the crate. Dealers say its so hard to keep them around since they are in such a high demand for right now ... hmmm i know 1 person with one in wisconsin. I got a couple different answers on "who would win" between the can-am and the polaris top end. There's no doubt about it that the can-am will accelerate faster due to the close to 200 lbs weight difference.
The weather was horrible when i went , so no one would let me take them for a test drive , but i will conquer them!
I didnt bother looking into the thundercat because it would simply be a waste of my time. I would NEVER buy one , but thats me.
More to come with this shortly.
The review estimates top speeds in the low seventies, if I read right. I have a very hard time believing it will do 80+. I know theres a lot of HP there, but 80+ requires insane engine output, especially on a 800 pound ute with tires that naturally come with a high rolling resistance.
As for the KQ750, top speed is the same as the 700 version...72MPH, but it gets there quicker than the 700. I have also observed a fuel consu, tion rate of around 24MPG on my King Quad.
Good luck with your research.
I have thought about all of that when they where telling me these things , and it wasn't adding up. I am speaking ONLY off of what they have told me , since i dont own ANY of them and know noone who does.
You would be the perfect person to ask seeing as you have the KQ. Ill have to talk to some people who own others and let them tell me from personal experience seeing as the dealers will bs me just to buy that machine.

RE: Hmmmm....what would happen?

Straight line stock for stock , the thundercat would pwn everything else mention , hands down.
But like Greygrizz said , throw in a couple curves and some rough terrain and i've give it to the renegade. 450's just couldn't hang with it.

RE: Renegade 800 vs Sportsman 850 XP

I'd bet the Thundercat, Renegade, BF750, and probably the Outlander 800 will probably be quicker than the Sportsman. Can Am upped the output of its 800 this year, and the big Cat is even faster. I'd bet a King Quad 750 would give it a run as well. Yes, the HP rating on the Polaris is high, but where in the rpm range is the HP peak measured? Is it in the "usable" range? Beyond that, the new Polaris seems to have many improvements, but on aspect of this machine stays constant. Its a pig. 784 pounds dry weight (thats around 825 full of fuel). For this reason, the horsepower ratings mean squat. Power to weight ratio says it still doesn't live up to its stickers. The beastie also comes with 26" tires out of the box. That won't help accelleration one bit.
Polaris has to put the sportsman's on diets. They have all weighed a lot, hell ALL of their machines have weighed in fatter than the competition.
the thundercat is supposedly the "muscle car" in the atv market right now, but handles for chit. It looks like a tank version of a jeep cherokee, and i dont like it one bit. I havent checked any of them out yet, because all dealerships where closed yesterday too! Im heading out now to see some of them , maybe get a chance to test drive them but since it is 50 degrees and we just melted 2 feet of snow mud is everywhere and they MIGHT not let me.
Ill post more about them if/when i get a chance to ride them.
